Porphyry on the Esplanade?

Porphyry stone paving’s place in landscape competitions like Manhattan’s East River Esplanade is a natural.  Natural stone with beauty and permanence in a harsh environment where it will become part of the permanence of place is a quality hard to match in any other product.

CIVITAS, a union of citizens dedicated to improving neighborhood quality of life in the Upper East Side and East Harlem since 1981, is sponsoring a competition.

Design Competition

“CIVITAS is calling architects, landscape architects, urban planners, students and artists to generate dramatic and original concepts for the east side’s waterfront park, jump-starting a process that aspires to the transformation of the entire East River pedestrian experience.

Through the design-ideas competition, we hope to establish greater equality with other New York City waterfront parks by developing a spatially rich and varied scheme that will enhance the east river waterfront’s narrow confines with recognition of its total urban context.

A well-integrated mosaic of new landscape, additional structure and alluring sculpture and lighting will help this prominent waterfront site achieve its potential as a vital and stimulating outdoor location, a favorite refuge for residents of all ages and a destination for tourists and visitors from all over the world.”

Porphyry's composition determines its high compression strength, resistance to stains, slip resistance, and high freeze/thaw ratings.  The stone is the most popular paver in Europe, and is favored for its flexibility in design, beauty, durability and low maintenance requirements. ADA Compliant Porphyry pavers are also adaptable to a permeable paving set. The stone is by far one of the most durable pavers in the world.  These materials are available from Milestone Imports.   -  www.milestoneimports.com
