Aspects of a closed joint with Porphyry cubes:
A closed joint is usually 2-5mm in width. The adjacent paving cubes are close to each other but not actually touching at any point. This joint width is useful in dealing with the dimensional variations in Porphyry cubes.
This arrangement allows a fine-grained joint material to fill the joint and create an essential cushion between the paving units and to generate a huge amount of both horizontal and vertical interlock which helps ensure the porphyry cubes remain firmly where they are meant to be.
Horizontal interlock is the friction generated by the jointing medium which helps the paving units resist forces which try to shift it in the horizontal plane, either backwards, forwards, side-to-side, or rotationally. Vertical interlock is the friction generated by the jointing medium which helps the porphyry cubes resist forces which try to shift it in the vertical plane, up or down.
Unlike a butt joint where spalling can occur as the stone moves through expansion or load forces, closed joints leave a small amount of space between stones. Spalling is chipping or other damage to the edge of the paving unit often caused by the stone being in direct contact with an adjacent unit.
