The scheduled opening in March 2009 was fast approaching, and the February weather was cold and wet – totally unsuitable for pointing with cement based materials. However the contractor solved the problem by using GftK Epoxy Resin Pavement Jointing Mortars that enabled the work to continue whatever the weather, plus the majority of the joints were actually pointed by a team of only three men in a SINGLE DAY. While the cost of the GftK Jointing Mortar was substantially higher than sand and cement, the labor savings alone meant that the jointing costs were almost equivalent; with the incredibly fast application speed of GftK materials also allowing completion on time for the opening, saving precious schedules and financial commitments.
The paving at the Arc mixed use development in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk includes 850m2 of 100 x 100 x 80mm granite setts. These are laid as a feature around its central square and the contemporary designed Debenhams ‘anchor store’. The drainage and substructure were built up in accordance with BS 7533, the setts were then placed individually with approximately half of them formed into attractive fan shapes. The project was originally specified to be pointed by hand, with cement based mortar. Based on past experience, the contractor had allowed for this to be carried out by a team of four men working continuously for at least two weeks. However the paving was delayed to allow other trades and the finishing / fitting out contractors to have unrestricted access.
Bury St Edmunds is one of England’s best preserved historic market towns. Its medieval urban structure is largely unspoiled, but many buildings within the town have been subsequently refaced to suit the styles of later eras.
The Cattlemarket site was established in Victorian times, when this activity was moved from Cornhill, the medieval market place, to a site adjacent to the town’s western perimeter. When market activities ceased the site became a large car park. The town then seized the opportunity to extend its historic core into this area and commissioned Centros Miller together with Hopkins Architecture to work on the masterplan for this area.
